Selma, AL – Filming is now underway this week, for the new film SELMA. The civil rights themed movie is executive produced by Oprah Winfrey and Brad Pitt. The movie centers on three marches from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama that took place in 1965.

Filming began earlier this week in both cities for 6 days of shooting.

Some of the principle filming has already been done in Atlanta. Winfrey will portray Annie Lee Cooper, a brave and bold civil rights hero who slapped Sheriff Jim Clark in 1965. Ms. Cooper died four years ago at the ripe old age of 100!

Other key names in the film include: David Oyewelo (stars as Martin Luther King Jr); Carmen Ejogo (plays Coretta Scott King); Ava DuVernay (director), along with actors Tessa Thompson and Salli Richardson.

Former Tennessee Tribune freelance writer/editor Sonya Jenkins is also part of the cast and crew, as she’s working as a standing, which is how many of today’s superstar actors began their careers. Congratulations Sonya!
